‘Eyes on the Prize’ May Finally Clear Rights
If you really want to talk about what is messed up with copyright in this country, here’s a prime example. This award winning documentary about the US civil rights movement has been unviewable in the United States for years because the original rights for various media used in the series had expired and the film maker lacked the funds to clear the rights anew. Now I know that the holders of copyright are entitled to full enjoyment of their rights, but there needs to be some provision in the law for use such as this. Think about, how could the rights holders be economically harmed if soembody just released ‘Eyes’ on DVD without clearing rights?
Wired News: Cash Rescues Eyes on the Prize
When filmmaker Henry Hampton first created the series, the owners of still photos, video footage and music granted permission to use the material for various lengths of time. Many of those rights have since expired, and it is more costly now to re-clear them.
The task of reacquiring those rights has fallen on Forman and a team of film industry veterans who worked on the Eyes series. They have a formidable job ahead: Blackside used video footage from 82 archives, and approximately 275 still photographs from about 93 archives, according to Forman. About 120 song titles were used as well.
DIY Arcade Box
This is cool. I’ve been thinking of putting something like this together for the kids.
MAKE: Blog: HOW TO make a Penny Arcade
“I have a hobby of creating arcade machines using computers and MAME. This is a budget arcade cabinet. Instead of a computer running the MAME software, the gaming is provided by a Namco TV Games 5-in-1 game controller, hacked for real arcade controls. So, instead of spending a few hundred on a computer, the controller is $20. Also, inside is a 14″ TV, saving money there too. The Penny Arcade plays Pacman, Galaxian, RallyX, DigDug, and Bosconian“

A Brief POV Change: Student Thoughts on Laptops in the Classroom
This post came up on De Novo, one of the student blogs I track. We spend a fair amount of time going on about things like laptops and wireless in the classroom and it is of interest to hear what students may have to say.
De Novo: Re: Student Use of Technology in the Classroom
The way I see it (and our Dean seemed to agree at a question and answer session I attended last spring), if a professor can’t keep my attention, whose fault is that really? Probably mine, but it doesn’t change the fact that if she can’t keep my attention, no amount of banning instant messenger is going to help. Back before I had a laptop, I doodled. I doodled masterpieces during classes that were uninteresting. Or I daydreamed. I can easily do those things again, and I still won’t be paying attention.
Just out of curiuousity, how many law schools know if their students are blogging?

iPod As a Disruptive PC Boot Device?
Sure Slashdot’s all worked up about the headline “Has Google Peaked?” but the real fun of the article is at the end where the idea of using iPods loaded with OS 10.4 to boot Intel PCs and sending MSFT into spasms is the real neat idea:) Just think about. A 20 gig hard drive you carry around loaded with a functional operating system and lots of your stuff. Just plug in and boot up. Cool
PBS | I, Cringely . August 25, 2005 - Has Google Peaked?
“Every one of those iPods is a bootable drive. What if Apple introduces OS 10.5, its next super-duper operating system release, and at the same time starts loading FOR FREE the current operating system version — OS 10.4 — on every new iPod in a version that runs on generic Intel boxes? What if they also make 10.4 a free download through the iTunes Music Store?“

Using CSS to Position Lists
How to Use CSS to Position Horizontal Unordered Lists - WebReference.comLet’s say that you’ve chosen to use a horizontal styled unordered list for your navigation and have followed the generally accepted CSS methods put forward by the many CSS information sites on the web. All’s well until you decide that you don’t want your menu to be left aligned. You want to be able to position it centrally or to the right and this is where it starts to get tricky.
